Agafay Desert Guide: How to Get There, Best Time & Things to Do
Short answer: the Agafay Desert is a rocky desert about 40 minutes south-west of Marrakech. The best way to visit is a half-day trip with hotel pickup, combining a quad or camel ride with sunset views of the Atlas Mountains — or an evening dinner show at a desert camp.
Where is the Agafay Desert?
Agafay lies roughly 30–40 km from the Marrakech Medina, past the village of Tamesloht and close to Lalla Takerkoust lake. Unlike the Sahara, it is a stone desert: bare golden hills and plateaus with the snow-capped High Atlas on the horizon.
How to get to Agafay from Marrakech
- Organised activity with pickup — the easiest option; all our Agafay desert activities include return transfer.
- Private driver — about 40–50 minutes each way.
- Taxi — possible, but you need to arrange the return trip in advance as there is no public transport.
Best time to visit
Agafay is open all year. Spring and autumn are ideal. In summer (June–August) choose late-afternoon activities to avoid the heat; in winter, evenings are cold, so bring a warm jacket for dinner shows.
