Sleeping in the desert is on many Morocco wish lists, but not everyone has three days for the Sahara. An Agafay luxury camp gives you the silence, the stars and a sunrise over the Atlas, only about 40 minutes from Marrakech, and with a comfortable bed and a hot shower.
Camps in the Agafay vary a lot, from simple tents to boutique lodges with pools. This guide explains what “luxury” usually means here, which details really matter, and how to choose the right night for your trip.
What is an Agafay luxury camp?
It is a permanent desert camp set in the stony hills of the Agafay, south-west of Marrakech. Instead of the basic bivouac tents of a trek, the tents are furnished like hotel rooms: proper beds, linen, rugs, lighting and, in most cases, a private bathroom inside or attached to the tent. Meals are served in a central restaurant tent or on a terrace, and evenings usually include music around a campfire.
It is not a sand-dune camp. The Agafay is a rocky desert with hills and plateaus; if golden dunes are essential to you, read our comparison of Agafay vs Merzouga before you choose.
Camp levels compared
| Level | Tent and bathroom | Typical extras | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard camp | Furnished tent, shared or simple private facilities | Dinner, campfire | Budget travellers, groups of friends |
| Comfort / luxury camp | Tent with real bed and private bathroom | Dinner show, heating in winter, terrace breakfast | Couples, families, first desert night |
| Boutique lodge | Large suites or tents, designer interiors | Pool, spa, à la carte dining | Honeymoons, special occasions |
Our Agafay dinner show and overnight camp uses a partner camp in the comfort/luxury category: furnished tents with real beds and private bathrooms, dinner, live music, campfire and sunrise breakfast.

Seven questions to ask before booking an Agafay camp
- Is the bathroom private and inside the tent? “Private” sometimes means a separate block outside. Ask.
- Is there heating in winter? From November to March nights get cold; most camps provide heaters and thick blankets.
- Is the transfer from Marrakech included? A return transfer saves you a taxi negotiation late at night.
- What is included at dinner? Courses, soft drinks, show; alcohol is often extra or unavailable.
- Which way do the tents face? A tent facing the Atlas gives a far better sunrise.
- Can activities be added? A sunset camel ride or a quad session before dinner makes the stay complete.
- What is the cancellation policy? Ours is free up to 48 hours before arrival.
What a typical night looks like
Most stays follow the same rhythm. You are picked up in Marrakech in the afternoon, check in and drop your bag, then enjoy tea as the sun goes down. Dinner is a Moroccan meal of salads, tagine or couscous and fruit, followed by music around the fire. Later, away from the camp lights, the sky opens up; our stargazing guide explains what you can see. In the morning, get up before sunrise for the light on the Atlas, then have breakfast on the terrace before your driver takes you back to the city around mid-morning.
Getting there: transfers and timings
The Agafay camps are roughly 30 to 40 km south-west of Marrakech. Most of the road is paved; the last stretch to some camps is a gravel track that any car can drive slowly. Taxis from the medina are possible but often need to be negotiated for the return the next morning, and some drivers do not know the camp locations. A pre-arranged return transfer is the simplest option, and it is included in our overnight package. Pickup is usually timed for an arrival about an hour before sunset, so you have time to settle in, take photos and enjoy tea while the light changes. Check-out is generally after breakfast, with arrival back in Marrakech around late morning.
Why the sunrise is worth getting up for
Many guests come for the dinner and the stars, but the sunrise is often the moment they talk about afterwards. In the minutes before the sun appears, the stony hills of the Agafay turn from grey to pink and then gold, and on clear mornings the snowy ridges of the High Atlas light up on the horizon. Set an alarm about 30 minutes before sunrise, put on a warm layer and walk a little away from the tents. Breakfast on the terrace afterwards, with mint tea, msemen pancakes and fresh bread, is the perfect end to the stay.
Agafay luxury camp or a Sahara camp?
Both are memorable, but they answer different needs:
- Agafay: 40 minutes from Marrakech, one night is enough, comfort-focused, rocky landscape with Atlas views.
- Sahara (Merzouga, Erg Chebbi): about 9 to 10 hours' drive each way, best done as a 3-day Merzouga desert tour, high sand dunes.
Many travellers with only a few days in Morocco choose the Agafay. If you have a week or more, you can do both.
When is the best season for a night in the Agafay?
Spring and autumn are ideal: warm days, cool but comfortable nights and clear skies. Summer nights are pleasant after hot days, so a camp with a pool is a big plus from June to September. Winter brings crisp, very clear nights and cold mornings; ask for heating and pack a warm jacket. See our Agafay weather month by month for details.

How much does a night in an Agafay luxury camp cost?
Prices depend on season, tent category and what is included. As a rough, approximate market guide, a comfortable camp night with dinner and breakfast often starts around 100 euros per person sharing and rises well above that for boutique lodges and peak dates. Transfers, drinks and activities may be extra. We quote on request and list exactly what is included, with payment on the day.
Who should (and should not) choose a desert camp?
A night in the Agafay suits couples, families with children old enough to enjoy a late evening, groups of friends and anyone who wants a slower pace than the medina. It may not suit travellers who need step-free access everywhere, since paths are sandy and stony, or light sleepers sensitive to wind on canvas. If you only want the views without staying overnight, an Agafay pool day pass with lunch is a relaxed alternative.
